More information about 1920s-1930s Egyptian Revival Bust: Lion God Aker

Traveling Man Treasures Curiosity Vault is selling this Egyptian Revival bust of the Lion God Aker made from a heavy composite material called "Faience" (invented by the ancient Egyptians) and then fired in a traditional Egyptian blue glaze. Replicas of ancient items began being made for affluent visitors who traveled to Egypt on educational "Grand Tours" of various archaeologically significant sites in and around Europe between 1780-1920s; and the practice continued through the "Egyptian Revival Period" which ran through the 1920s-1930s.

Aker (also known as Akeru) was an ancient Egyptian earth god and the deification of the horizon. He guarded the eastern and western borders of the netherworld and protected the sun god Ra
when he first entered the netherworld at sunset and again when he returned to the world of the living at sunrise, and bore the sun on his back through the underworld.
