A statement of the reform support network in connection with the adoption of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of a new version of the Law “On Elections of Deputies of the Verkhovna Rada of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, local councils and village, settlement, city mayors”

On July 22, 2010, the reform support network published a new statement in connection with the adoption of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine by a new version of the Law “On Elections of Deputies of the Verkhovna Rada of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, local councils and village, settlement, city mayors.”

The topic of local elections, principles, rules and procedures governing their implementation is in the field of close attention of the network from the very beginning of its activity. In particular, on April 15, the network published its first statement on the principles of local elections in Ukraine. After that, the network representatives participated in the parliamentary hearings “Reforming the legislation of Ukraine on local elections in the interests of territorial communities” (May 12, 2010) and made proposals for improving the relevant legislative standards.

Unfortunately, the majority of positions proposed by the reform support network and other public associations have not been taken into account in the newly approved law that actually occupied local elections as one of the important forms of direct exercise of power by Ukrainian citizens and an effective means of updating political elites both at local and national levels.

The network coordinator in the Chernihiv region is the Polissya Fund of International and Regional Research.
