Round table “European Relations with Ukraine”


Under this name, a round table was held in the expert club “Clean Policy”, dedicated to Europe Day in Ukraine. The event was organized by the City Council Public Relations Department together with the Clean Policy Expert Club. At the invitation of the expert club, the President of the Polissya Foundation Gennady Maxak took part in the event.

The head of the city council public relations department Irina Solomakha reported that the decision to celebrate Europe Day in May was made by the leaders of the EU countries at the EU Milan Summit in 1985. It is May 9 that is considered to be the Birthday of the European Union. On this day in 1950, French Foreign Minister Robert Shuman proposed to create a united Europe to support peaceful relations between European states.

In Ukraine, the holiday was established in accordance with the Decree of the President of Ukraine “On Europe Day” of April 19, 2003 No. 339/2003 and is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of May.

Gennady Maxak, President of the Polissya Fund of International and Regional Studies, briefly spoke about the general context of relations between the European Union and Ukraine. According to the topic of the round table, it is the context of the European Strategy for Ukraine that should be emphasized. The expert spoke about the institutional and normative dimension of relations, as well as problems of political nature, which do not allow to optimize this path.

Yuri Tkach – Head of the Chernihiv City Non -Governmental Organization “Euro Club” noted that in the last few years work has been significantly intensified in the direction of cooperation with the European Union not only at the national level but also at the level of cities. This year, in addition to the annual drawing competitions on asphalt, quizzes and art events, with the support of the City Council will be held for the first time the campaign “Festival of European countries”, which will be held on May 22 at the Heroes Alley. All city educational institutions will take part in the festival. During the draw, the European country will be determined by each school: its official symbolism, culture, traditions, national outfits and kitchen.
