“Self -Government – Realities of Modernity”
On December 6, a roundtable meeting on the topic “Self -Government – Realities of Modernity” with the participation of representatives of the deputy corps of the city council, associations of citizens, mass media and heads of structural units was held in the Chernihiv City Council on the eve of the Day of Local Self -Government.
In the introductory speech, the secretary of the city council, Candidate of Law Oleg Sheremet emphasized the need to adequately assess the problems
Pavel Vovk, the head of the legal department of the city council, made a report on the topic on local self-government in Ukraine as a basis for the realization of the rights of the territorial community.
Yuriy Vdovenko, Vice President of the Polissya Fund of International and Regional Studies, considered the Institute of Local Self-Government through the Prism of Public Relations. In particular, he listed the traditional toolkit of such cooperation and noted that most of the above is successfully used in Chernihiv.
Yu. Wodenko emphasized that with the effective cooperation of the authorities and the public can be achieved a lot, but an important prerequisite for such cooperation should be quality civic education.
Traditional for European countries the directions of increasing the transparency of local authorities were called by the chairman of the Public Council on the issues of publicity and freedom of speech, Tatiana Boyko, while noting that in the last few years many of them have become effective.
The deputies of the city council Valentina Trachtenberg, Artem Stakh, Pavel Garmash, Andriy Kuzholnko and Sergey Averchenko shared their thoughts on the development of representative democracy. They expressed the belief that it is the work of deputies with voters on the ground that is most important both to strengthen people’s trust in power and to fully solve the problems of the territorial community.
“It is not only the impression of a particular deputy, but also about all power as a whole. The great responsibility of the deputies is the formation of the image of local authorities,” O. Sheremet is convinced.
